Connect with students new to your country by volunteering/tutoring at their school or after school program. We should be more open-minded, and helpful towards the refugee crisis. A way to help would be by partnering with a local school which has a large number of refugee students. Our group went to a school named Ibarra Elementary in City Heights. We made international friendships, with the kids at Ibarra and helped mentor them with their school work. The best thing about this experience is that you get to know the kids, and connect with them. It also lets them know that people actually care about them.
Collaborate with the people around you for donations that they need. Our experience at Ibarra has inspired us to not only give the students our time and friendship but also help them with donations. We asked what the Ibarra students needed so we could ask for donations. One thing that was needed was Clif Z-Bars for the students in the afterschool program. What we did was ask our team for donations which resulted in having 11 boxes donated. We also need school supplies which the volunteers are still currently working on.
